ASPIRE-SSI: 3267 Patients Enrolled

As of January 21th, 8697 patients were screened, from which 3267 were enrolled into the ASPIRE-SSI study cohort.

These study cohort subjects underwent 11 different surgical procedures, including vascular, emergency, orthopedic, cardiac and spinal procedures. The procedures which are most frequently included are open cardiac surgery (n=716), prosthetic knee surgery (n=658) and prosthetic hip surgery (n=631).

Currently, 33 sites across ten European countries are recruiting subjects for the study. Some of these sites are approaching their recruitment goal, after which ongoing data cleaning will continue and then close out procedures will start for these sites. As the study aims to recruit 5000 subjects into the study cohort, the screening and enrollment procedures will continue until this goal is reached.

The study team is happy to announce that as of this week, all sites that received the green light have indeed screened their first patient. These sites are located in Belgium and in the Czech Republic. We thank all the local study teams for their hard work to make the ASPIRE-SSI study a success.

Background of the ASPIRE-SSI study: The primary objective of the ASPIRE-SSI study is to determine the incidence of S. aureus surgical site infections (SSIs) in various adult surgical patient populations. Another aim is to identify patient-related, pathogen-related, and contextual risk factors. Immunologic features protective against S. aureus SSI will also be assessed.

The knowledge obtained from this study will enable the identification of patients at risk of developing S. aureus SSI. Also, it will help identify who could benefit the most from new prophylactic interventions for S. aureus SSI.
