ASPIRE-SSI: Enrollment Completion in Sight

As of June 21st, 11239 patients were screened, from which 4353 were enrolled in COMBACTE-NET’s ASPIRE-SSI study cohort. Only 647 patients are left to reach the 5000 target.

The study cohort subjects underwent 11 different surgical procedures, including vascular, emergency, orthopedic, cardiac and spinal procedures. The three procedures which are included most frequently are open cardiac surgery (n=861), prosthetic knee surgery (n=858) and prosthetic hip surgery (n=796).

Earlier this year all 33 sites in 10 European countries were activated. Currently, 30 are still actively recruiting.  Some of the participating sites are approaching their recruitment goal, monitoring and data cleaning is at its peak and will continue until close out procedures can start and samples are shipped to the central laboratory. This month the first site successfully completed the study and the first close out took place.  As the study aims to recruit 5000 subjects, the screening and enrollment procedures will continue until this goal is reached. The last subject to be enrolled is expected  in September 2019. The timing depends on the recruitment rate over summer.
