New Centre to Address Antimicrobial Drug Development Challenge

University of Liverpool will be the host of a new research center that will accelerate the research and the development of new drugs in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

The new research center will be named ‘Centre for Antimicrobial Pharmacodynamics’ (CAP), and will be established in partnership with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and North Bristol NHS Trust. The funding for the infrastructure (£630,000) is provided by Innovate UK.

As the issue of antimicrobial resistance continues to rise, so does the urgency of the development of new research centers such as CAP. The new center will be in line with other organizations in Europe and the US who focus on research and drug development. It will serve as a local resource for both UK and global AMR organizations. CAP will offer research facilities such as state-of-the-art in vitro and in vivo models of infection; preclinical imaging facilities; advanced pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK-PD) and mathematical modelling skills. Antimicrobial pharmacodynamics training facilities will also be provided.

“The CAP will build on Liverpool’s existing strength in antimicrobial pharmacodynamics and therapeutics research to give scientists access to the skills and equipment they need to advance the development of new antibiotics” stated William Hope, Professor at University of Liverpool.
