Study Update ASPIRE-ICU: 25% of Subjects Enrolled

In March 2017, ASPIRE-ICU has reached an important milestone: 25% enrollment! Currently 536 subjects are enrolled, of the 2000 that are aimed for.

Sites were chosen after a careful selection procedure, which assesses the feasibility of performing this study by both the laboratory as well as the ICU. The large number of specimens that are taken throughout the inclusion period, among other things, makes the study more difficult than usual observational studies. Currently, 19 of the 30 selected sites are enrolling subjects in the study cohort, some of which just having started. Apart from feasibility, sites are also chosen based upon region; ASPIRE-ICU aimed to have all four large regions of Europe (North/East/South/West) equally represented. The 536 subjects who are now enrolled are almost entirely coming from the Southern and Western region of Europe (n=488), where 12 sites in 5 countries are currently actively enrolling (Turkey, Spain, Serbia, Germany and the Netherlands). The other 8 sites, in Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech Republic, United Kingdom and Estonia, have only recently started.

The remaining 11 sites that are selected have not started enrolling study cohort subjects yet, but hope to start very soon. As of this month all sites have received approvals from all regulatory agencies. The team expects that all 30 sites will be enrolling subjects in the next 2 months.

ASPIRE-ICU is a prospective, observational, multicenter, epidemiologic cohort study. Nested within routine surveillance among ICU patients in Europe. Aimed at the advanced understanding of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in Europe (ASPIRE). The goal is to estimate the incidence of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa ICU pneumonia, especially ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Another goal is to assess its association with patient-related and contextual factors.
