Practical Recommendations for Implementation of Semi-Automated Surveillance of HAI

COMBACTE-MAGNET's EPI-Net's recommendations document on how to implement semi-automated surveillance of healthcare-associated infections has been published.

Automated surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) is appealing as it can reduce the surveillance workload and improve the quality of surveillance. Implementing (semi-) automated surveillance in healthcare facilities is, however, a tedious project involving many stakeholders.

Guiding Implementation Efforts

The COMBACTE-MAGNET EPI-Net surveillance projects previously validated a framework to develop (semi-)automated surveillance in European hospitals (ICHE, 2020), and subsequently supported participating facilities in the implementation process.

In the now published practical recommendations document  the network shares its reader with easy-to-follow guidance for the preparatory phase, the design and the implementation phase. The recommendations are experience-based and some theoretical concepts are based on the collaborative work with the JPMIAMR’s PRAISE network (Providing a Roadmap for Implementation of Automated Infection Surveillance in Europe, publication to follow). These recommendations are expected to help infection control project leaders, epidemiologists and other professionals aiming to implement automated surveillance start their project effectively.

About EPI-Net

EPI-Net, COMBACTE-MAGNET’s Epidemiological Network, is a European network to harmonise and connect various European systems of disease surveillance, by linking clinical, microbiologic, and public health data. EPI-Net maps and organizes available surveillance systems in Europe. EPI-Net will complement the general COMBACTE-NET backbone by strengthening our ability to monitor the spread of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance across Europe.

EPI-NET ONE HEALTH PLATFORM

In 2018 EPI-Net launched the first-of-its-kind European platform that connects various national and international European surveillance systems for infections and outbreaks due to antibiotic resistant bacteria by linking microbiologic and epidemiological data. The platform allows greater insights into distribution of serious bacterial infections in the human and animal populations across the continent.
