Faces of Antimicrobial Resistance
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) published a series of stories about patients from the US who have faced antibiotic resistant infections. Some of them survived the infections, but others were not as lucky. The Faces of Antimicrobial Resistance report highlights the urgency of combatting AMR, which kills an estimated 25,000 people every year in Europe alone, costing society €1.5 billion per year.
Dr. William Powderly, President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, states in his foreword “There is no silver bullet for AMR; we need a robust, multi-faceted approach that includes infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, surveillance, research, innovation and an expert workforce. A combination of well-coordinated strategies will be necessary to protect patient safety and the public health and turn the tide of this crisis.”
