World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2018
Every year in November the World Health Organization (WHO) organizes World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW). This year’s WAAW will not have a specific theme; the 2018 WAAW campaign seeks to provide greater flexibility to regions and countries to reflect their unique priorities, target specific levels of awareness and their specific audiences.
Raising awareness on antimicrobial resistance
By running this event WHO seeks to increase antibiotic resistance awareness globally and encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance (– WHO, 2018). On this occasion WHO launched interactive material to support WAAW, namely fact sheets about antimicrobial resistance and antibiotics, infographics, videos, animations, etc.
“Our approach is to anchor WAAW 2018 in the Global Action Plan on AMR with five “focus” days of tailored social media messaging around each of the Objectives.
Combatting Antibiotic Resistance in Europe
The fight against antibiotic resistance requires a unified front. COMBACTE is an unprecedented collaboration between industry and academia to tackle the scientific, regulatory, and business challenges hampering the development of new antibiotics. The COMBACTE projects were created to meet the challenges of clinical development of antibacterials in response to the worldwide growing problem of antibiotic resistance. In collaboration with other consortia within the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) News Drugs 4 Bad Bugs (ND4BB) program, the projects will enable more rapid and efficient development and commercialization of much-needed new antibacterial treatments and diagnostic tests.
