Reaching Out: A Meeting to Advance Clinical Research Preparedness for Infectious Disease Outbreaks

On 20-21 September PREPARE and GloPID-R are providing a global, solutions-focused meeting in Brussels, which will examine bottlenecks to (rapid) deployment of clinical research in an infectious disease outbreak and how to overcome them.

Confirmed speakers include: Prof. Dame Sally Davies, Dr. Ilaria Capua, Prof. Mario Monti, Dr. Nicole Lurie, Prof. Dr. Herman Goossens and Dr. John Amuasi.

The event is intended for anyone involved in outbreak preparedness: clinicians, researchers, patient organisations, regulatory bodies, public health officials, administrators, and ethics advisory groups.

The agenda will include presentations, panel discussions and audience debate on:

  • The vital role of clinical research in an infectious disease (ID) epidemic or pandemic
  • Insight into clinical trial networks in global regions
  • The value of combining antimicrobial (AMR) clinical research with ID pandemic preparedness
  • The fundamental role of working in partnership with patients and the communities
  • How regulators can ensure robust yet expedient review of clinical study protocols
  • The value of novel clinical trial designs to evaluate therapeutic interventions

The Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R) is the only network of major research funding organizations working on a global scale. The Platform for European Preparedness Against (Re-)emerging Epidemics (PREPARE) is building Europe’s capacity to do clinical research under the inevitable circumstances of an infectious disease epidemic or pandemic.

PREPARE and COMBACTE

In order to be able to rapidly initiate meaningful clinical research of any kind, in response to any kind of severe ID outbreak, an up-and-running pan-European clinical network is indispensable. COMBACTE is assisting in finding suitable sites for PREPARE in the ‘Hospital care’ area. PREPARE uses CLIN-Net and LAB-Net to perform clinical trials.

PREPARE is an EU funded network for harmonized large-scale clinical research studies on infectious diseases (IDs), prepared to rapidly respond to any severe ID outbreak, providing real-time evidence for clinical management of patients and for informing public health responses. PREPARE will establish a common European clinical research infrastructure covering over 600 primary care sites and over 600 hospital sites in 27 EU member states.
