RECONNECTED AT ECCMID 2022

The 32nd European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases (ECCMID), took place in Lisbon from April 23-26. For the first time ECCMID was organized as a hybrid event both onsite and online. COMBACTE already participated at ECCMID for nine years, sharing valuable science. Our colleague from STAT-Net, Marlieke de Kraker shares her experience at this year's ECCMID.

“Despite the tempting sights in Lisbon’s old city center, and the sunny weather, the different sessions were well attended, and I enjoyed some of the new concepts like the interview session with Evelina Tacconelli and Leonard Leibovici. At the conference, two of our COMBACTE outputs had been selected for an oral presentation. The first one focused on risk factors for Staphylococcus aureus ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill S. aureus carriers.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia

A post-hoc analysis of SAATELLITE (Phase II clinical trial) and ASPIRE-ICU data (prospective cohort study). It showed that patients that are colonized in the lower respiratory tract have a much higher chance of ventilator-associated pneumonia, especially if they were admitted for trauma, a cardiac event, or neurological disease compared to respiratory admissions. While duration of mechanical ventilation less than four days and antibiotic exposure active against S. aureus reduced incidence of S. aureus ventilator-associated pneumonia. This suggests that there is a role for preventive antibiotic treatment in colonized patients under mechanical ventilation.

Bloodstream infections

The other presentation focused on the analysis of EURECA data, and looked at risk factors for bloodstream infections due to carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales in 18 European hospitals. It showed that evidence of previous colonization/infection with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales was a major risk factor for bloodstream infections by this pathogen. Enterobacterales bloodstream infections in general were strongly associated with evidence of previous colonization/infection with other multi-drug resistant pathogens and previous healthcare exposure. As such it was concluded that targeted screening, infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship should focus on these high-risk patients.

After all work was done, it was great to meet-up with old and new friends from all over the world, enjoying some of the best seafood platters I ever had. I am already looking forward to ECCMID 2023 in Copenhagen!”
